Pastor Steve Barrows of Bible Baptist Church of North Spencer
Built in 1870, Bible Baptist Church of North Spencer provides a place of worship for Pastor Steve Barrows and sixty church members. With cold New York winters, heating the church and gymnasium has been a significant expense for the congregation. Using rice coal as a heat source, they had been relying on vendors to transport the coal up to the top and center of their outdoor coal boiler building. Pastor Barrows became determined to find a more cost-effective way to keep everyone warm during the winter season.
To help him, Pastor Barrows consulted Doug Benson, former Patz Dealer and current Patz District Representative. Doug worked with him on his heating project and installed a Patz Model 8912 Belt Conveyor to transport the coal. Since then, Pastor Barrows reports, "We could not be more pleased with the equipment."
The church’s new conveyor has saved time and fuel as they can unload larger truckloads of coal faster. According to Pastor Barrows, "It used to take one hour to unload five tons. The Patz conveyor will unload from the truck, lift, and store away five tons of coal in about nineteen minutes! It works like gangbusters!"
Since Bible Baptist Church now has its own conveyor, they are no longer limited to coal vendors that have the means to unload coal from their trucks. They are able to save money by "shopping around" for the best price.
In addition, the conveyor makes better use of the storage bin capacity. Pastor Barrows says that this enables them to take advantage of volume price discounts by purchasing coal in larger quantities. Plus they save money by buying more coal in the off-season at a lower price.

Pastor Barrows expects the Patz Model 8912 Belt Conveyor’s payback period to be less than ten years due to reduced coal costs and time savings. He said, "This heating system reduced the annual cost of heating with oil from $20,000 to $6,750!"
